Artificial intelligence has been reshaping higher education administration for years—in enrollment management, academic advising, and financial aid. Conflict resolution has been slower to adopt AI tools, but the pace of change is accelerating. In the last two years, a new generation of platforms has emerged that apply AI to conflict intake, triage, guided self-help, and case management in ways that were not technically or economically feasible even five years ago.
The current generation of AI tools in campus conflict resolution falls into several categories: conversational intake tools that help students articulate and document a conflict situation; natural language processing tools that analyze intake information and suggest appropriate pathways; AI-assisted case management systems that flag high-risk situations and track case progression; and digital mediation support tools that provide structured frameworks for facilitated dialogue. None of these replace human mediators and case managers; all of them extend the reach and consistency of human services.
Institutions considering AI-assisted conflict resolution tools should approach evaluation with clear questions: What problem is this tool solving? What human capacity constraints is it addressing? What are the ethical guardrails, and how are they enforced? What data is being collected, by whom, and for what purposes? These questions, asked systematically before adoption, prevent the most common pitfalls of technology adoption in student affairs.
